Our news - 28/8/5
This is all great news for rowers, but for rollerskiers and nordic bladers, the completion of the infrastructure which has been put in place surrounding the lake means it's also becoming something of a mecca for these sports as well. It also means that rowers have another low-impact way of cross-training once they're off the water. Surrounding the lake there are effectively of 10k, of tarmac tracks which are available for all to use whenever there is no rowing place on the water. Visitors are welcome, but obviously must watch out for rowers and their instructors. In practice, as long as you check there is no rowing event taking place, you can use most parts of the circuit all the time. There is a higher track between the lake and the driveway where you won't come across instructors on bikes at all, and is probably the best bet for busier training times (except on major events days). The tarmac is great - the only exception being the driveway by the lake's entrance which has a distinct lunar quality to it. But that's just for cars, so don't worry about that! As cross-country skiing and rollerskiing are perfect as cross-training for rowers (Pinsent, Cracknell and the GB rowing team have used cross-country skiing in their training programme) we're hoping we can get some more rowers to try rollerskiing at Dorney as well as Richmond Park. It's very flat generally which makes it perfect for learning balance and technique, but if you're looking for hills you'll probably go elsewhere. Dorney Lake is situated 5 minutes from J7 of the M4. See the Dorney Lake website for directions and details of events being held at the lake.
