Go Rollerski - bringing rollerskiing to 14-25 yr olds

Go Rollerski is our new initiative for 14-25 year olds.  Run by us, but with support from Snowsport England and various Local Authorities, this aims to bring a younger generation into the sports of rollerskiing and cross-country skiing.

We start in October, with a number of 6-week courses.  Confirmed venues are Bushy Park, SW London and Brooklands Racecourse, Surrey, but we have applied to run the scheme in Hyde Park and other venues as well.

Funding

Generous funding from the National Lottery's Sportivate scheme means we can offer the courses at a much reduced price.  The 6-week course will cost £30 per participant (ie £5 per session), to include all equipment and coaching.  Running the sessions in the 'fresh air' of Bushy Park and Brooklands Park means there is no venue charge either.

After 6 weeks we will offer skiers the chance to keep training locally, with the aim of taking part in a rollerski race or tour, or an on-snow cross-country ski half-marathon race.  Several ski marathons offer discounts for young people (eg the Engadin Skimarathon 21k race is free for anyone born in 1998 or 1999) and accommodation in dormitories and Youth Hostels is available.

We're looking for enthusiastic teenagers and young people, and supportive parents. This is a unique opportunity, and the first time something like this has been attempted in England (although a fantastic set-up exists in Scotland, whose ideas and coaching methods we will be borrowing).

Booking

Bookings will go live around 20th September, but please contact me (Iain Ballentine) in advance on iain@rollerski.co.uk and I'll make sure you're notified as soon as the places are available.  We will be working with Snowsport England and the local councils to fill the courses, so we're hoping for a great demand.  And we're looking forward to doing something really good for our new skiers and the sport.
