Rollerski 1-day course for Juniors

SUNDAY 19TH SEPTEMBER AT DORNEY LAKE

To support British junior cross-country skiing, this Autumn we will be running a junior group at Dorney Lake. This will be for both complete novice juniors and intermediates, and the course will be run at a reduced and subsidised rate.

The format will be along the same lines as the adult Dorney day - see here - but with junior skiers in mind. Our instructors Ekaterina and Felicity have both done a lot of teaching of kids, and have both been involved with the British Nordic Development Squad (BNDS) in the last 12 months. We'd like to act as a catalyst to bring a lot more young people into the sport, and bring together families and coaches interested in getting involved.

  • rollerskiing & cross-country skiing appeals the most to young people who enjoy endurance sports - eg athletics, swimming, rowing, cycling, canoeing - and who are self-motivated;
  • supportive parents are essential. Young people wanting to get good at cross-country skiing need to have the time to train and recover, and there is little funding available. As a sport it is very much less expensive than, say, downhill skiing. But to succeed at a high level you need to put in a lot more training;
  • the equipment for rollerskiing may at first appear expensive, but you can start with a simple pair of combi skis and boots and one pair of poles. The BNDS organises boots to be 'handed down' as juniors' feet grow;
  • rollerskiing is good fun. For anyone who prefers the 'endorphin' rush of hard exercise to the 'adrenalin' of other sports, it will appeal.

The first day we will run is on Sunday 19th September at Dorney Lake. The cost is £30 per skier. All equipment is provided, but you will need to bring a packed lunch and plenty of liquids to stay hydrated. Our instructors will be on hand, and maybe also an instructor from the BNDS (if available).

After this day, skiers will be encouraged to make it to the BNDS's half-term training camp at Castle Combe, Wiltshire. Before this, here will also be the chance to practice at the Dorney rollerski day on 17th October, and juniors can also join our Richmond Park club on Wednesday evenings (if convenient).

About the British Nordic Development Squad

This squad takes young skiers aged from 12-18 and develops them through a series of camps on rollerskis during the year, and then on snow. To qualify for the training on snow, you must attend at least one dry-land camp during the year.

In England, skiers tend to be referred to the squad by regional cross-country ski clubs, and Snowsport England affiliated instructors. But individuals, or their parents, can put themselves forward for consideration. Felicity Bertram, who runs our juniors' group, attended a camp in August 2010 and this was here report -

'I have just been up to Scotland to join in with the British Nordic Development Squad (BNDS) training camp. 18 athletes, aged 11-20 stayed near Aviemore to get together for some roller skiing and testing. We started each morning with a jog or something else to get us going (ultimate frizbee the day I was in charge), then breakfast, followed by a longer ski, lunch, ski again, dinner and then the final ski of the day - this last one being something fun such as classic-sprints, ski-cross jumping or similar. We stayed in a youth hostel, with various parents volunteering to cook - meaning we got back from training to be greeted by vats of spag bol, or curry or pasta bake. I can't even start to guess how many weetabix we got through. The Olympic skiers were there, which showed the younger people just how far they can develop over the next 5 years, and we all learned loads from them. Not only did I have a fantastic time, but I also have returned fired up even more about the junior squad here, and a much more knowledgeable coach. It is amazing what the BNDS achieves on a mouse-sized budget, so if any of you work for a company that would like to be associated with a young vibrant sports team that is getting better by the day, then let us know'.

You can read a lot more about the squad on its website - www.bnds.org.uk - although not details of the camps at the moment.

Before you come -

We recommend that you do a few 'balance' exercises beforehand, such as:
1. standing on one foot (1 min each foot x 3);
2. jumping sideways from one foot and land on the other, and hold balance;
3. balance on one foot and jump forward (feet parallel) and land on the other.
It is best to stand with you knee over your toe - when you do these exercises.
